“O you who believe be upright for Allah and be bearers of witness with justice.” (Quran 5:8)
The Shah-E-Najaf Islamic Center of Suffolk County in New York stands in solidarity with the oppressed citizens of America in their struggle for justice, and for an abolitionist approach to police reform, reparation, and liberation.
The death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a white police officer was the result of inhumane police brutality that is perpetuated by a culture of racism and white supremacy which has penetrated all levels of the American legal system. The countless murders of black men and women by armed agents—funded by our tax dollars—of the state must end and all those accountable brought to justice immediately.
Systemic racism is deeply rooted in our society, and every effort should be made to reform or replace institutions, banks and corporations that are implicated in the system of racial injustice.
Furthermore, we demand the release of all black political prisoners in US jails, and the dismantling of current structures of US policing – including an end to US-Israel police partnerships.
We seek Allah’s assistance during these difficult and challenging times and reflect on the words of Imam Mahdi (a), “All praise be to Allah Who secures the frightened ones, comes to the help of the upright ones, promotes the cause of the weak ones…”
